My topic is on Josip Broz (Tito) and the previous day communist Yugoslavia. Specifically, Yugoslavia under his rule.
I chose this topic for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have Croatian heritage, which I am very interested about. One of my best friends lives in Croatia and through chats with her, I learnt about him. I like the idea of communism, though it hasn’t always turned out to be the best. Communist Yugoslavia gives me hope that perhaps one day communism could be perfected.
This topic follows under history because he was a fairly important person throughout Yugoslavia’s history and was apart of some major incidents. This could also follow under law due to the politics behind communism.
This focuses mainly on the political aspect. Due to Josip’s rules as a communist dictator.
K: what I know about the subject
W: what I want to know
L: what I have learnt from my readings
- After World War 2, Josip Broz became “president for life” for communist Yugoslavia
- Whether Josip Broz was “too much” of a dictator” - Whether Yugoslavia was “better” under Josip’s rule
- Josip Broz had many conflicts with Stalin and Yugoslavia was kicked out of the Cominform. - Attempted to create a neutral state during the cold war.
1. How Tito came to power.
2. Whether Tito was too much of a dictator and did he create a neutral state. 3. Was Yugoslavia better under his rule.
1. Under Tito’s rule, Yugoslavia created a communist state which was far from the previous communist states; and did a much better job doing so.
2. Through Josip’s rule, Yugoslavia created a peaceful and “neutral” country through the cold war.
Step 3: Developing a Hypothesis & Research Questions
TOPIC: My topic is of Josip Broz and Yugoslavia under his rule.
OVERVIEW OF TOPIC: After liberating Yugoslavia, Josip Broz (Tito) became “president for life”. Through his ruling, he created a communist state with Tito as a dictator. However, Tito clashed with Stalin and the USSR and was kicked out of the Cominform. Through his leadership he attempted to make Yugoslavia a neutral country through the cold war.
CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION(S) REGARDING TOPIC: - Was Josip Broz a good leader for Yugoslavia? - Whether Yugoslavia was a “better” kind of communism - Was Yugoslavia neutral during the cold war? - Was Tito “too much” of a dictator?
HYPOTHESIS: Under Josip Broz’s rule, Yugoslavia was a peaceful and neutral country through out the cold war.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: You should have a minimum of TWO (2) questions of each type for your research. These questions should be clear and relate to your hypothesis. Remember, they should guide you in your research not confuse you.
Ø Factual Questions - When did Tito take control of Yugoslavia? - How did Tito take power? - Who supported Yugoslavia’s position in the Cold War?
Ø Clarification Questions - How was communism in Yugoslavia different then that of the USSR? - What was the Cominform? - How much of a dictator was Tito?
Ø Interpretive Questions - Why was Tito a good leader? - Why was Yugoslavia kicked out of the Cominform? - Why did Yugoslavia oppose the USSR?
Ø Inquiry Questions - How was Yugoslavia neutral during the Cold war? - How was Yugoslavia peaceful during the Cold war?
